We rely on your support to bring powerful arts programs to 600 people with disabilities across the Berkshires—from Great Barrington to Pittsfield to North Adams. Your gift helps artists with disabilities explore, create, and find community, through dance, acting, painting, juggling, writing, singing, yoga, and drumming. Every gift you make directly benefits CATA artists and CATA’s mission to redefine disability. We can’t CATA without you!

Please contact us if you have any questions about making a donation.

Stock Donations

A gift of appreciated securities is a generous and tax-effective way to support Community Access to the Arts (CATA).

When you donate appreciated holdings to CATA, you avoid the capital gains tax you would have paid if you sold the asset. If you have owned the securities for longer than twelve months, you also receive an income tax charitable deduction for their full fair-market value. These tax savings—both in income and capital gains taxes—make gifts of securities a popular alternative to cash.

For all U.S. Stocks and Securities:

Before initiating the transfer, or, if you hold the physical paper certificate for the stock, please have your broker contact Katie Clarke, Administrative Director.

IRA Charitable Tax Rollover

In December 2015, President Obama signed a tax bill making permanent the IRA Charitable Rollover, a tax incentive for charitable giving that had previously been subject to annual renewals.

Individuals are required to begin taking distributions from their contributory Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) at age 70.5. These required distributions are called Required Minimum Distributions (RMD). Normally, these distributions are subject to income taxes. The IRA Charitable Rollover provision allows individuals who have reached age 70.5 to donate up to $100,000 to charitable organizations directly from their IRA, without treating the distribution as taxable income. In order to qualify, contributions must go directly to a 501 (c)(3) and be made from contributory IRAs. (ROTH accounts do not qualify.) Donors may receive no goods or services in return for their contributions, and must obtain written documentation of their contribution from each recipient charity. The donor can deduct the full amount of the donation from gross income for tax purposes.

Anyone over 70.5 can withdraw funds from their IRA to give directly to CATA with NO TAX PENALTY, for a gift anywhere between $100 and $100,000. For individuals who must take forced withdrawals, this makes philanthropy a smart option in your overall financial plan.
