ABOUT THESE PAINTINGS:

Pat Butler’s stunning abstract painting, Organized Chaos, draws the viewer in with its striking color palette and expressive movement. As noted in her title, Pat balanced ideas of freedom and structure in her painting, resulting in a work that is at once playful and measured. To create her work, Pat used an innovative, adaptive painting technique called “Artistic Realization Technlogies” (or A.R.T.). Using a laser pointer and working closely with a trained assistant (CATA faculty artist Pat Hogan), Pat Butler directed every movement of the brush on the canvas. Click the videos below to hear Pat talk about her work and to see the A.R.T. technique in action.

Paired with Pat’s painting are two beautiful pieces by Josh Monterosso and Michael O’Donnell, which highlight the expressive potential of negative space between brushstrokes.
