John Milewski’s energetic watercolor painting calls to mind the botanical cut out works of Henri Matisse. In his piece, John used short, multicolored brushstrokes to create a motif of varying density—from light in the top right corner to heavy and exuberant as the eye moves down to the bottom. Viewed from afar, the brushstrokes move like dance steps across the canvas.

Paired with John’s piece is a delicate watercolor painting by Kelsey Taylor, who used opaque shades of blue, green, and brown to create a dream-like scene, like a pool of water or clear sky meeting against a path or hedge of bushes.
